OFF-WHITE ONE-SHOULDER COLLEGE DRESS
This one-shoulder college dress was designed by Chicago-born Virgil Abloh, the founder of luxury street wear brand Off-White and first Black creative director for Louis Vuitton menswear. Abloh went to school for engineering and achieved a master’s in architecture and uses this background to navigate his design style. The design for this dress was inspired by the repurposing of vintage clothing and although neither fabrics were recycled from old garments, the juxtaposition of high and low styles is an Abloh signature. With the word “HARD” prominently featured on the chest in crimson, recalling Harvard’s iconic branding, Abloh is wryly making a commentary on the difficulties of Black and African American students navigating institutions of higher education.
