RACOON FUR COAT
This picture proves that it is so iconic because you can see an interracial couple showing off their wealth. They are enjoying themselves in a lively and noisy way such as the Cadillac car, the raccoon fur coats, as well as the brownstones houses. The ideology behind this photograph is to confirm how black people in Harlem pursued a better quality of life than the one generally prescribed them by the segregation culture in America. The Harlem Renaissance was an African American cultural movement that flourished in the 1920’s and had Harlem in New York City as its symbolic capital. These coats emerged in the early 1900’s as part of a trend and became a craze of the 1920’s. Princeton played a huge role in this trend; this fashion piece became affluent not only because Princeton students wore it but also because of the cost. Later the coat became a trend to African American students, Yale students and Harvard. They were mostly seen during football competitions and were worn by both females and males during cold weather. Raccoon coats later became an important factor to the outdoor fur styles. Raccoon coats had a huge impact on fur fashion during this era.
