KARL KANI VEST
Karl Kani, a leading streetwear designer in the nineties, was also one of the creative minds behind the streetwear brand Cross Colours. After spending three years at Cross Colours, Kani launched his eponymous label in 1994. With little money to spend on advertising, Kani relied on hip hop artists that he knew to wear his designs on MTV and during live performances to get his name out. Kani’s sales began to skyrocket once he began putting his signature on his pieces, and artists like Tupac, Snoop Dogg, and Biggie quickly adopted his styles. Vests were some of Kani’s best selling pieces, one of which is shown here. Adorned with two patch pockets at the hip, one on the breast with D-ring buckles attached, and his signature embroidered in a bold red, this piece truly captures the essence of Kani’s brand.
